What we read and when

This page reports what Walgreens's own pages said on that date, and what government pages say about pharmacies and sharps. We are not linked to Walgreens. We link only government pages, so we name Walgreens's pages here without a link. Store offers can change without notice, so call your store.

What Walgreens's disposal page offers

Walgreens's "Safe Medication Disposal" page, read on October 6, 2026, listed three options. All three are for medicines:

OptionWhat the page said
Medication disposal kiosksAt select stores, for unwanted, unused or expired medicines, during pharmacy hours
Prepaid mail-back envelopesAt the pharmacy, for unused or unwanted medicines
Disposal packetsAt the pharmacy, to make medicines unusable before they go in the home trash

We searched the full page text for the words needle, syringe and sharps. None of them appeared. Walgreens's kiosk store finder, also read that day, lists stores that have a medication disposal kiosk. It did not mention sharps either.

Do not put needles in a medicine kiosk

A medicine kiosk is not a sharps drop box. Minnesota's pollution control agency warns against taking household sharps to the medicine drop boxes found at pharmacies or police stations. Bring sharps only to a place that says it takes sharps.

Where pharmacies do take sharps

Some states and cities have pharmacy sharps programs. These are government pages, read on October 6, 2026:

  • Boston: the city has a pharmacy syringe ordinance, and its public health commission lists the pharmacy drop-off sites.
  • New York State: the state health department says pharmacies are among the places that offer syringe drop boxes.
  • Mississippi: the state environmental agency runs free household sharps drop-off stations, and says most are at pharmacies and fire stations.

None of these pages tells you which chain or store takes part in your area. Call the store, or use the sharps disposal finder to see your county's official options.

Buying a sharps container

South Dakota's natural resources agency wrote in January 2023 that sharps containers can be bought at pharmacies and stores, and named Walgreens as one. Our guide on where to get a sharps disposal container lists other ways, some of them free.

When a container fills up, go to sharps container disposal. To ship one instead, read about sharps mail-back programs.

Questions

Does Walgreens take used needles?

We could not confirm that it does. When we read Walgreens's safe medication disposal page on October 6, 2026, it covered medicines only and did not mention needles or sharps. It did not offer to take back full sharps containers either. Some stores in places with pharmacy sharps programs may take them, so call your store first.

Can I put needles in a Walgreens medication kiosk?

No. The kiosks are for medicines. Household sharps do not belong in pharmacy medicine drop boxes, Minnesota's pollution control agency says. Use a sharps drop-off site or mail-back instead.

Does Walgreens sell sharps containers?

South Dakota's natural resources agency named Walgreens as one place to buy sharps containers in January 2023. Stock varies by store, so call ahead.

Where can I take sharps instead of Walgreens?

Doctors' offices, hospitals, pharmacies, health departments, and police or fire stations can all be drop-off sites, per the FDA. Type your ZIP code in the finder to see your county's official pages.
